Angie’s vast artistic contributions underpin Australia’s contemporary underground musical culture. Having performed and collaborated in bands Circle Pit, Southern Comfort and Ruined Fortune, Angie launched her solo moniker in 2013.
A fleeting encounter at an alleyway gig in Athens, Greece in 2016 led Angie to meet John Vulgaris. The much-esteemed Greek engineer and producer had set up a makeshift studio in the Psyri neighbourhood of Athens, to which he invited Angie to record what would become the beginnings of The Underling.
Angie reflects on this time, saying “We arranged to record and I flew to Greece with excitement and trepidation, unsure of what, if anything, may eventuate from the session. I spent the first few days there trying to help my friend Alekos find his cat, Alma, which had disappeared in the local neighbourhood - but soon enough, the sessions begun with rehearsals in a rented studio space inside a tall dilapidated skyscraper where John’s band, Bazooka, rehearsed. The next three weeks we worked in this makeshift studio inside an underground rehearsal space, negotiating instrumentation and stylistics into the late, late night, often almost spilling into the morning.”
After a solidified period performing piano compositions from her third LP 'Shyness', as far afield as the Sydney Opera House and a small dive bar in Tokyo, Angie describes The Underling as a return to exploring various dimensions of the rock and roll genre; “the final chapter to the exploratory rock trilogy initiated by Turning (2013) and continued by Free Agent (2015) - dirty, sometimes desolate, yet hopeful and groovy rock and roll.”
The Underling, a piece of 30-something minute rock action, will be released on May 24th via Dero Arcade.

V is a multi-disciplinary artist, composer and performer, who after many years of living, working and creating in Berlin, is now based in Melbourne.
V is an accomplished performer; a multi-instrumentalist (V plays drums in queer 80s synthwave band Dark Water [Aus] and bass in industrial dance band Permission [Aus/NZ]), V has also performed on screen in feature film ‘Desire Will Set You Free’ and in videos for Dutch artist Thomas Azier and Australian/Irish band Evvol.
A reverb-drenched explosion of darkwave, the V project was born ten years ago in the legendary Tacheles artists’ squat in Berlin.
Following up from V’s self-titled debut album, (released via Berlin’s Freudian Slit Records in 2012), V’s sophomore record ‘SO PURE’ will be released via Dero Arcade on February 15th, 2019.
‘SO PURE’ was written, recorded and produced by V over a period of six years, the process of which spanned borderlines between Berlin, Brussels, Amsterdam, Welwyn Garden City and Melbourne. ‘SO PURE’ is dedicated to Gentle, and explores notions of grief, what it means to be deeply connected to another human being, and the space that is left behind after death. Inspired by 80s goth and synthwave, V’s ‘SO PURE’ is a darkwave supernova.
V was featured in i-D Germany as a recipient of the Welcome to Berlin Award 2015, a project supported by the Music Board Berlin. That same year, V was awarded a radio show called ‘STUDIO V’, which ran between 2015-2016 in Berlin, presenting a bi-monthly showcase of classic and contemporary underground music. V performed at the 2015 Berlin Music Video Awards and has been playing the underground festival circuit with both V, and her other band Transylvania.
Since returning to Australia, V has made an impact on the underground scene, and continues to gain momentum in the lead up to the release of ‘SO PURE’. V has played the Chapter Music edition of Red Bull Sound Select, had a Tote band room residency (Fuck U Pay Me 2018) and played at festivals including Maggotfest 9, Ångst Fest (2017 and 2018) and Adelaide-based festival Half-Strange (2017). V has also played various underground festivals overseas, including but not limited to: Torstr Festival 2016 (Berlin), Bitchcraft Festival (Brussels), Bestival (UK), Fluff Fest (Poland), T.A.L.O.I.G.A. Fest (Melbourne) and Nothing Nice to Say Fest (Berlin). V has supported bands like Nun, Primitive Calculators, Habits, Dispossessed (Syd), These New South Whales, Nylex and Rebel Yell amongst many others.
V’s live shows, which she speaks of as being “the most important part of the V project”, are theatrical and performative in nature, and have been described as terrifying to witness.
Following the release of ‘SO PURE’ on February 15th, V will be touring Australia in March, before bringing the live show to Europe mid 2019. Dates to be announced soon, but for now, be sure to check out new single 'SO PURE'HERE.
Sydney based singer-songwriter Tom Stephens began writing and recording music under his own name in 2012. Following an uncomfortable but fateful encounter that involved fainting in a café, Stephens crossed paths with bassist Cam Whipp. From here, the first link was established in what was to become an extensive collaborative chain. Enter lead guitarist Mon Ellis, contributing his experimental sonic textures, and revered musicians; keyboardist Chris Long and drummer Rob Turner.
Under his own name, Stephens released his debut full-length album What Lies in the Difference to considerable acclaim in late 2016, with airplay from Triple J, FBi, 2SER and ABC Radio National, alongside The Brag writing of the album “an exceptional record in all senses of the word”.
With a new album in development, 2017 saw Stephens and band light up the Golden Age Cinema stage as part of VIVID Festival, and leave a lasting impression with punters and industry alike at BIGSOUND in September.
After reflecting on the direction of Stephens’ musical journey, the decision was made to perform and release under the collaborative name Tesse.
Now, Tesse are set to release their debut full-length album How It All Unfolds in 2018. Citing Neil Young’s ‘On the Beach’, Wilco, Sun Kil Moonand Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Tusk’ as influences, Tesse’s sound is characterised by frigid, full-toned ebbs of acoustic and baritone guitar, stitched together by steady, hypnotic rhythms. Breaking the tides of brooding inwardness are tracks painted with the warmth of the hearth.
How It All Unfolds was recorded and mixed entirely in analogue, over six days in the winter of 2017, at Sound Recordings Studios in rural Victoria. The record was engineered by Alex Bennett (C.W. Stoneking, Ballpark Music), self-produced by Tom Stephens and Mon Ellis, and mastered by Joe Carra (Courtney Barnett, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard). By recording live without click tracks and utilising the natural acoustics of the studio’s setting, Tesse have created a debut record that is raw, layered and introspective.
‘I’ll Tell You in the Morning’is the first single to be lifted from the record, and explores the contrasting complexities and monotony of an unstable relationship.
Tesse will be launching ‘I’ll Tell You in the Morning’ this Nov-Dec 2017.

Things have been moving at an incredibly fast pace in the world of enchanting Brooklyn folk-rock quartet Big Thief. Having conquered all and sundry on their inaugural Australian tour at the tail-end of our last southern summer, they’re returning triumphantly less than 12 months later clutching their powerful second statement Capacity, a stunning follow-up to their acclaimed debut Masterpiece which introduced them to the world in 2016.
Musically Big Thief remain resolutely in thrall to no particular genre, swinging seamlessly between sparse, atmospheric folk and beautifully refined indie rock. Despite the wide critical acclaim afforded Masterpiece, for Capacitythe band chased a raw sound where spontaneity was paramount, arranging the new songs for the first time in the studio and then recording them that very same day to capture the initial spark. Melbourne singer song writer Robert Muinos’ name might be familiar to local music fans, as the backing vocalist and guitarist (and most recently record producer) in the soul juggernaut that is Saskwatch, one of the rotating members of new musical collective Dorsal Fins, as well as releasing his own solo works over the past few years.
Robert Muinos has returned to his solo work with a fittingly titled 'EP3' out now.The new EP is a dynamic work of restrained intensity and is a beautifully emotional release. Quite literally taking control of his past, present and future this collection of brutally honest and exposed performances were written, recorded and mixed by Muinos himself resulting in a crushing masterpiece of autobiography.
The first single to be taken from 'EP3' was 'Weeks At All'. An incredibly gripping and beautiful track premieredvia ROLLING STONE, describing the track as "making misery sound beautiful"
The metallic guitar on 'Weeks At All' scratch like an itch of frustration and there seems to be a catharsis to these songs as Muinos vocals climb to a sustained climax on the lyric “Let it out…”
The considered simplicity of the arrangements is displayed perfectly across 'EP3'. The rhythm section comprised of Muinos’ Saskwatch bandmates Olaf Scott (Keys), Tom Petit (Bass) and Melbourne songwriter Jim Lawrie (Drums) approach the space with sensitivity and a choked restraint that alludes to the feeling of self-defeat.

BOSS HOG ARE BACK WITH FIRST LP IN 17 YEARS!
After too many years of dormancy, New York City’s glorious garage-noise mutants Boss Hog are back, with their first studio album in 17 years Brood X, out April 7 via the almighty In The Red Records.
Led by Cristina Martinez (ably assisted by her faithful sideman/husband Jon Spencer, as ever playing Flavor Flav to Cristina’s Chuck D), Brood X feels less like the work of a group who’ve been on ice for so long, more a slithering and sludgy monster of an album, a boiling pot of hot funk keys, growling punk attack, searing blues breaks and the ground-shaking holler of Martinez (ex-Pussy Galore).
Having recently released singles'17’, 'Fomula X'and'Ground Control' already championed by Stereogum,The New York Times, The Quietus, SPIN and more, Martinez explains their almost two-decade gestation:
“There are different broods of cicadas emerging in cyclical periods, there are 13-year cicadas and 17-year cicadas. That’s what Boss Hog is like – we’re operating on our own cycle. We go underground for a number of years, re-emerge, make beautiful sounds, and then go away. That’s our cyclical life.”
On hiatus since they finished promoting 2000’s icy, wonderful Whiteout album, Boss Hog began stirring again late in 2008 with the first of several short runs of shows. Things started getting serious a couple of years later, when the Boss Hog all-stars – Martinez, Spencer, bassist Jen Jurgensen, drummer Hollis Queens and keysman Mickey Finn – decided this reunion habit was worth committing to wax.
Cooked up in the same Lower East Side basement where Boss Hog brewed their first blistering noiseouts, and cut at Michigan’s Key Club Recording Company on the same Flickinger N32 Matrix console Sly Stone used for There’s A Riot Goin’ On,Brood X is serious music for serious times, the perfect soundtrack for a necessary revolution.
New York has changed beyond recognition and there’s a buffoonish villain in the White House, but Martinez’s towering vocals and vicious, hilarious, emboldening lyrics have never sounded so sharp, nor Boss Hog so timely. Opener 'Billy', all brawny low-end and delirious funk organ, finds Martinez and Spencer howling about “The brink of destruction!” over apocalyptic beats, while 'Ground Control', a prismatic vision of today’s Big Apple, includes the bitter observation, “This is the cost of privilege”.
“A lot of Cristina’s lyrics on this album resonate with me more deeply since the election,” nods Spencer. “They’re blues songs, protest songs.”
“The songs do feel oddly relevant now,” Martinez adds.

Excited to announce In the Red Records will be releasing the first new album from Australia's favourite misanthropic noise-makers feedtime in over 20 years!! 'Gas' finds the band sounding exactly as they always did - pummeling, gnarly and awesome! Limited green vinyl available via In the Red store!
Sydney, 1978-79. Against the backdrop of the burgeoning inner city music scene, feedtime was formed. Taking notes from the incendiary live shows of X and Rose Tattoo, feedtime set about creating their own interpretation of the events unfolding before them, a blues-noise that was equal parts abstract minimalism and working class roots-rock. Post-punk, yet right in the thick of it; miles ahead of the pack and not many seemed to notice.
The classic line up of feedtime (reunited here on ‘Gas’) released 4 albums in the 1980’s before their initial dissolution in 1989. All four albums were licensed in the US, UK and Europe which generated the band an international cult following, held in high regard for their unique roots-racket and often cited as influential in the US regional band explosion of the early ‘90s. Fitting then, that in 2012 the band’s 4 classic albums were reissued as a box set by Sub Pop Records.
The band reformed with a new drummer in the mid 90’s for tours with The Damned and Unsane (with whom they shared a split 7”) and an album on Amphetamine Reptile. Years passed once again before the most well-known line-up of the band reformed for a performance in San Francisco for SS Records’ anniversary showcase in 2011. A rarities compilation appeared shortly after and a US tour in support of the aforementioned box-set finally gave international audiences an evening with feedtime.
‘Gas’ presents all the elements which make feedtime one of the great Australian pub rock bands. The staggering, woozy slide guitar; the thundering drums and the relentless thrum of the bass create the atmosphere of urban panic up against finding ways to smile amongst the bitter, harsh reality of life and how you manage your own spirit with that of those around you. Some make it through, some don’t. Those who do should count themselves lucky, because it all comes down to luck, Jack.
We’re lucky to have feedtime here and now. If there’s one thing these guys deliver, it’s a good time. Drink and dance and leave your problems at the door. Working all week to drunkenly stumble out of a Chippendale watering-hole, catching the blurry street lights, the sound of cars driving past on a wet road and how you didn’t realise it was raining because the band was so loud. It’s only Friday night.

Mates, music and homemade hot sauce have ensured Coburg's True North is always buzzing at breakfast and lunch, but the addition of local beers, seasonal cocktails and outstanding burgers have turned this popular café into a bar & burger joint, the perfect after hours neighbourhood haunt.
First opened in 2014 by good friends Nadia Camus and Brett O’Riley, True North’s offerings of American and South American influenced food with tasty vegan options and homemade Blackberry Belle sweet pies quickly found fans, and the café soon expanded from one shopfront to two.
Now open Thursday night through to Saturday, the team are serving up a new dinner menu known as The Cheeseburger Picnic with burgers and beers, $10 chilli on a Thursday and the very popular Pie or Die, where Camus' famous pies are matched to the bar's creative beer and cocktail such as True North’s take on the classic Bloody Mary (add your own heat from the extensive selection of hot sauces) and the ‘Cyndi Lauper’ (house made water melon fresca with tequila and lime). All vegan, vege and meat options baby!
It is this unique atmosphere that has locals realising they no longer have to go far to have a night out.
For Camus and O’Riley, serving food that they love and creating a space to hang out with mates is the ethos behind all things True North. ‘What you see on the menu is food that we both like to eat. We love flavour and being brave with it,’ says Camus.
True North's personalty certainly packs a mighty punch as you head through thedoor. With booths handcrafted from reclaimed timber; décor that pays tribute to Lemmy, Ozzy and cats; and a playlist that isn’t without the odd Manowar track, their playlists are to end all playlists.
Originally meeting through Melbourne’s music scene - O’Riley has played in all manner of bandsand Camus is a filmmaker – the duo’s friendship took shape at Camus’ old kitchen table, making ‘Nordic Frost Burn’, a killer hot sauce that has since become the signature sauce of True North. With fifteen years working in hospitality, Camus leads the charge in designing the menu, managing the floor and dishing up her famous sweet Blackberry Belle American-style pies; while O’Riley, whose hospitality experience began when True North opened it’s doors, looks after the back end duties, front of house, and keeping the coffee or cocktails coming.

Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds' fourth and strongest album yet for In The Red Records, “La Araña Es La Vida” summons the Mexican muse of The Great Spider Goddess of Teoticuhan, who sprouts hallucinogenic morning glories and protects the underworld, or in Kid’s eyes, the world of underground music. Recorded at The Harveyville High School gym in Kansas, Guitar slinger and singer, the legendary Kid Congo Powers (The Gun Club, The Cramps, Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds), bassist Kiki Solis (Baby Baby Dance With Me, Knife in The Water, Rhythm of Black Lines), drummer Ron Miller (Switch Hitter, Up The Academy) are joined by Chicano, Mosrite playing guitarist Mark Cisneros (Medications, Deathfix) on this self-produced ball of wax.
